In business trips to Italy, France, and Germany in my past life, I took pictures of my own of the graffiti in languages I could not read while still appreciating the art. Some of it is stunning.Personally? I can't draw a straight line with a ruler so I would never have been very good at it :)
If I ever travel again I will keep a record of the difference in graffiti! Yes, I took love the colours and the shapes even if I don't know what a lot of it means ❤️
Watch the DVD series Rome. Graffiti drawings tell you how and what people think back in Caesar’s time. Reflections on walls, scribbles on pavement. Could even say city skin tattoos. Youth to senile servitude there is no age limit. Canned humor somedays, territory marketing. What’s mine is not yours. Gang warfare. Back and front of transit signs, walls any mortal would be scared to climb. There the brushes display their pallet. I like the chimp in spacesuit. Wonder how it gets the peanuts inside the helmet. And under the gray bridge perhaps a closer color shot of canvas would do. Thanks for your crawl down alleys and vale’s. Risking your life.
Excellent comment Richard, so much in it! Yes there is so much in graffiti and I’d love to see ye olde writings too. We learn so much about our culture as you so beautifully say. I am also interested to see that this post has provoked several unsubscribes in such a short time which I can assume means that not everyone wants to see the underbelly of society ha ha. But I probably knew that already! I might brave watching the series, I am not very good with watching anything scary or violent though and considering how the Romans were… hmm… maybe too much for me!
This may be one of my favourite instalments to date.
I’ve never done any graffiti myself, but being a skateboarder who frequents a lot of the same places — I’ve found myself in an adjacent little subculture. And like you, I like graffiti. It’s interesting to see what people say and I also admire their commitment to do it despite the risks.
Thanks Michael. Yes you share a commonality with graffiti artists - concrete! Blocks of concrete shapes are begging to be decorated and skated upon 😂 I hope to see good graffiti photographs as backdrops to the skate action in your book ❤️
Rectitude have I
"Not art, just vandalism"
Hate me if you must!
Artistry have I
"A new Art we pioneer!"
Admire my great skill!
Two views both valid-
The ethics of aesthetics
No one can decree.
Oooo, this is GOOD! “ Two views both valid”, yes I like that a lot!

History in the making with romantic interludes. Cleopatra and warfare intermixed . Caesarian birth of treasures.
So true! The crazy diversity of humans.
Yep, you're right. I took your advice and cropped in!
Thank you. Wonder if artist (s) had a boat.
ha ha, good question!!
“I was told the truth
In a brick tunnel, down town
I followed advice.”
— turn off the news, indeed!

Not only that but some of it is really good art.

Yes concrete shouldn’t be bare. Paint it, skate it, leave a mark — we were here!
Thanks April :)

Thank you for being here Corinne. ❤ Your haiku inspired me to write about the darker side of graffiti.

Humanity's mess
Plastered in such complex layers
Paint and tears drying

Crows fly Westerly
High upon gusts in the sky
From the nesting clouds
Graffiti is what happens when poetry and art have a baby!
Perfect! Thanks Stan, LOVE this comment ❤
